Throughout the year, the JLYC teachers present special focus classes and workshops giving students an opportunity to focus on a particular aspect of their practice. The special topics presented complement the knowledge students gain from weekly class.
Iyengar Yoga Intensives are taught by senior Iyengar Instructors from throughout the United States. These intensives give students a concentrated practice of Iyengar Yoga (10 hours over the course of three days) allowing students to go deeper than is possible in a regular class.
Getting away from the routines of daily life encourages us to deepen our commitment to yoga. Our five day yoga retreat provides a beautiful setting for practicing all aspects of yoga.
Special Focus Workshops
The Upside of Upside-down
Tonya Garreaud
Saturday, November 6
1:00 – 4:00 pm
$45
The inverted poses are revitalizing for the whole body, providing numerous physical, mental and emotional benefits. The inverted poses can feel quite liberating, but if you feel that you are lacking in physical strength, flexibility or confidence, they can feel far from freeing.
Dedicate an afternoon to discovering techniques to improve your experience of the inverted poses. Learn various ways of practicing the basic inversions: full arm balance, headstand and shoulder stand and see how the more elementary poses and the use of props can develop the correct actions required of the inverted poses.
Open to students with one year of Iyengar Yoga experience.
Yoga for the Upper Back, Shoulders & Neck
Ed Miller
Saturday, November 20
1:00 – 4:00 pm
$45
Are you or someone you know experiencing discomfort or pain in your upper back, shoulders or neck? If so, learn how yoga can help. Spend an afternoon with Ed practicing poses that create length in your spine, space in your shoulders and stability in the supporting muscles.
You will receive printed materials describing the poses so you can practice them at home. Previous participants of this workshop report increased understanding and decreased discomfort as a result of their practice.
Open to students of all levels including students with no previous yoga experience.
Candlelight Restorative Workshops

Tuesday, December 14
6:00 – 8:00 pm
$30
Deep rest is essential for well being. It revives us and returns us to a state of calm vitality. In the winter season, nature asks us to hibernate, meditate and be still in order to glimpse the richness of the unknown. At the same time, our culture asks us to gear up for the holiday season and in our busyness, to become even more active.
Julie’s annual Candlelight Restorative Workshop offers you the opportunity to give back to yourself and in doing so, reestablish an expansive and generous place from which to give to others.

Iyengar Yoga Intensive
Gabriella Giubilaro
September 10 – 12
$185
Gabriella Giubilaro is widely known for her dynamic teaching of Iyengar yoga, her good humor, her attention to individual needs, and the clarity of her presentation. She believes in communicating the essence of the yoga postures through simple, but meaningful explanations that help her students discover the intelligence of their own bodies. She also challenges students so that they can experience their maximum potential.
Gabriella began her practice of Iyengar yoga in 1973, studying with Dona Holleman. She worked with and assisted Dona in her classes for sixteen years. In 1977, after receiving her doctorate in physics at the University of Florence, Gabriella decided to dedicate her life to studying and teaching yoga. This scientific training is apparent in her teaching. Her explanations are clear and direct and sometimes draw on scientific principles.
In 1983 Gabriella made her first trip to Pune, India, to study directly with B.K.S. Iyengar, and since then she has gone to the Iyengar Institute to study with the Iyengar family almost every year. Gabriella opened the Iyengar Yoga Center in Florence in 1989. With the collaboration of other teachers at this center, Gabriella has helped to spread Iyengar yoga in Italy and has trained many teachers, throughout Europe and the entire world. She is also the cofounder of the Association Light on Yoga in Italy. Since 1986, Gabriella has taught regularly in Russia, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Bielorussia, as well as in the United States.
