A student of yoga since the early 1980s, Ed began teaching in 1989 while working in corporate America. His early training encompassed several schools of yoga but his passion and teaching focus on Iyengar Yoga. Participants in Ed’s classes report experiencing instructional clarity and individual attention with compassion. This supports improvement of their yoga practice and enhancement of personal well-being. As the eldest member of the staff, Ed considers teaching yoga his “third career." His interaction with students draws upon his training, teaching and leadership experience in a variety of areas. In addition to teaching yoga, he also currently provides instruction in mat-based Pilates and several forms of Tai Chi Chuan. In 1990, his own back problems led Ed to undertake specialized training with senior level Iyengar Yoga teachers, with the goal of helping to heal himself. Ed continues to study and learn about yoga's benefits by using his own body as a testing ground. In addition, his personal yoga work has given him firsthand knowledge for students with spinal, back or sacral issues.
Additionally, Ed has acquired a practical and personal understanding of how yoga aids those with orthopedic joint replacement. Ed has assisted his wife Dottie through rehabilitation from replacement of both of her hip joints and both of her knees. In 2006 Ed had his own left hip replaced with a total-metal prosthetic joint. |
Ed provides personalized attention to each student, modifying poses so that the experienced student, the beginner, and the physically challenged can simultaneously achieve the maximum benefit from each pose. Ed has a generous heart and a great sense of humor, encouraging a sense of community in his classes. I learn something new and valuable in every class. - Rosemary Schwimmer
