Yoga is an ancient art and science with numerous practical applications in modern life. The yoga asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing) use the body as a tool for concentration. By working the body, controlling the breath and quieting the mind, we create a stable, calm framework from which to live our lives. Yoga is a powerful practice to help us deal with our daily challenges in a more graceful and empowering way. At JLYC it is easy for anyone to begin doing yoga; no one is too stiff, old, overweight, or out of shape to begin. If you are new to yoga, or new to the Iyengar method, you are welcome to attend one of our Free Introductory Yoga classes. The free introductory classes are offered quarterly before the start of a new term. Our classes are offered on a quarterly basis. Weekly classes develop each student’s ability both within a class and from one class to the next. Level 1 classes introduce the fundamentals of alignment, principles of movement, tools for concentration and the essentials of relaxation. The focus is on the basic postures with special attention to standing poses and the breath. We also offer the Gentle Class for those who prefer a slower pace. We hope your participation in our classes proves to be as valuable an experience for you as it has been for so many of our long-time students who have found peace of mind in a busy world. |
Yoga is the calming wind that blows over our noisy lives. One good yoga stretch and the noise in my head is gone. Nothing else that I do in my life works so quickly or so well. At the end of each class or practice I rejoice that yoga has not only taken the knot out of my back, it has also taken the knot out of my head.
